Pakbeng is a very small town on the bank of the Mekong River, halfway between Houayxay and Luang Prabang, with one high class hotel: Luang Say Lodge Luang Say Lodge, with its backdrop of forested mountains, has 16 large pavilions (with 19 rooms) of solid wood all with balconies looking out onto the Mekong River and the mountains beyond.

Exclusive The pavillions are quite nice, but not that large. During my visit the pavillion staff was quite surly, but the restaurant staff very helpful. The (only) road leading to town is an unpaved dirt track and lacks streetlights, so better carry a torch after dark. |
