Detailed Tour Itinerary:

Lotus - Highlights of VietnamDay 1

After arriving at Tan Son Nhut Airport, you will be transferred to the hotel, stopping briefly along the way at the post office and the Notre Dame Cathedral – two elegant reminders of France’s colonial past. After checking into the hotel, you will have lunch at a wonderful Vietnamese restaurant.

 

After lunch, you will return to the hotel and the rest of the afternoon will be free to spend at your leisure.

Today you will make an excursion to Tay Ninh, the centre of Cao Daism. Here you will visit the main church of this unique religion which combines different elements of other faiths. You will arrive in Tay Ninh in time to witness the noon mass - a very colorful spectacle. After the mass has finished, you will have lunch at the Anh Thanh Thao restaurant.

 

After lunch, you will continue on to the Cu Chi Tunnels, stopping along the way at a small rice paper factory. During the Vietnam War, the Vietcong dug out an extensive tunnel complex that served as a sanctuary in the fight against American forces. Part of the complex has been left in its original state and you can crawl through these tunnels – a harrowing experience indeed.

 

Later, you will return to Ho Chi Minh City.

Your guide and driver will pick you up a for a two-day tour of the Mekong Delta region where the Mekong River approaches and empties into the sea through nine tributaries. The Delta is one of the most fertile areas of the country and is also called the "rice basket" of Vietnam.

 

First, you head for Mytho where you board a boat to visit the Cai Be floating market. Boats of all sizes ply the waters, and fruits, vegetables and flowers are among the many kinds of produce that you can find for sale here.

 

After lunch with Vietnamese specialties on An Binh Island, you will explore the island by bicycle.

 

In the afternoon, you will continue by boat to Vinh Long and then drive to Cantho, the political and economic centre of the Mekong Delta. After arriving in Cantho, the rest of the day is free to spend at your leisure.

Another wonderful day of sightseeing begins as you set off for a sunrise cruise and an early breakfast. You will board local boats to explore the environs of Cantho and then take breakfast at a private house.

 

Later in the morning, you will visit Cai Rang floating market, one of the liveliest floating markets of the Delta with many wonderful photo opportunities.

 

Witness the market’s fascinating scenes, and experience the hustle and bustle of vendors and small boats laden with fruits as you pull up to the merchants to haggle for bargains. Your boat will then take you through the green water landscape to see local houses, verdant orchards and ship-building yards until the trip ends at Ninh Kieu pier in Can Tho.

 

Driving back to Ho Chi Minh City, you will have lunch at a specially selected restaurant along the way. At Ho Chi Minh, you will transfer to the airport for your flight to Danang on Vietnam Airlines

 

You will be met upon arrival at the Danang Airport and transferred to your hotel in Hoi An. Formerly known as Faifo, Hoi An is an exceptionally well-preserved example of a South-East Asian trading port dating from the 15th to the 19th century and it was declared a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1999. The town is located along the Thu Bon River, 30 km south of Danang.

Day 5: Hoi An

Today is a free day to explore this World Heritage site on your own. For those who are interested, we have a wide range of tours or activities in and around Hoi An. It is possible to rent a bicycle and explore the surroundings of Hoi An or spend time on the delightful Cua Dai Beach, only 4 kms from Hoi An. It is also possible to make an excursion to the Cham ruins of My Son, another World Heritage site.

Day 6: Hoi An

This is another free day to continue your exploration of the area.

 

Your Vietnamese cooking course will start at 16:00 and last until 20:00. This cooking course will be at an exclusive location and you will learn to cook a selection of traditional Vietnam dishes. Do the best you can, because you will be expected to consume the food that you cook for dinner!

Day 7: Hoi An - Hue

After breakfast, you will be picked up at the hotel by your guide and driver ready for your visit to the Marble Mountains and the famous Cham Museum in Danang. This lovely museum displays artefacts from the culture of Champa.

 

You will continue your drive to Hue over the Hai Van Pass from where you have fantastic views over the South China Sea. In the afternoon you will enjoy a delicious seafood lunch at a restaurant in Lang Co. 

 

After arriving in Hue, you will visit the Forbidden Purple City, constructed under Emperor Gia Long's reign in the early 19th century AD. It's located inside the Citadel of Hue, which was badly damaged during the Tet offensive in 1968.

Day 8: Hue - Hanoi

The day is free to continue exploring Hue on your own, or join one of the wide range of options for tours and activities we offer in and around Hue. For example, it is possible to make a boat trip on the Perfume River or visit the Tien Mu Pagoda and some of the splendid imperial tombs around Hue.

 

Check out is at noon and you will then transfer to the railway station to board the overnight Sleeper Train to Hanoi.

Day 9: Hanoi

After you arrive at the railway station in Hanoi, your luggage will be transferred to the hotel while you start touring right away (rooms will not be available until noon).

 

You start off with a delicious breakfast at one of our favorite restaurants before you start your day tour, which takes in all of Hanoi's essential sights. You will first visit Ho Chi Minh's Mausoleum and museum, and then the One Pillar Pagoda and Hoi Chi Minh's House on Stilts*.

 

You will continue your tour with a visit to the Temple of Literature before heading to the Ngoc Son Temple and Hoan Kiem Lake. The Ngoc Son temple is set on a tiny island on the Hoan Kiem Lake and dates back to the 13th century. The lake itself is a picturesque focal point of Hanoi, frequented by tourists and locals alike.

 

After a sumptuous lunch, you will take a relaxing one-hour cyclo tour through the Old Quarter. Also known as the 36 streets, this bustling area of narrow streets is home to literally thousands of small businesses and shopkeepers. It's a great place to explore with plenty of photo opportunities.

 

Once the tour is over, you will head to the Flower Hotel where you will stay overnight.

 

* The Mausoleum and Museum are closed on Monday and Friday and usually during the months of October and November for maintenance. If the Mausoleum and Museum are closed, you will visit the Museum of Ethnology, widely acknowledged as the best in the country. The museum houses a display dedicated to Vietnam's 54 ethnic minority peoples.

Day 10: Hanoi - Lao Cai

Today is a free day to explore Hanoi on your own. For those who are interested, we have a wide range of options for tours or activities in and around Hanoi. It is possible to make an excursion to the Perfume Pagoda or to Ninh Binh where you can visit the ancient capital of Hoa Lu and Tam Coc, also known as "dry Halong Bay".

 

Check out is at noon and there will be an early evening transfer to the railway station to board the overnight 2nd class sleeper train to Lao Cai.

Day 11: Lao Cai - Sapa

You will be met upon arrival at Lao Cai railway station by your guide and driver. Lao Cai is right on the Vietnamese/Chinese border. The majority of the inhabitants of Lao Cai province are ethnic minorities such as Hmong, Thai, Zao, Giay, Nung, Tay, Sa Pho, Lolo, Xa Mang and Phu La, and most of these tribal people still wear their traditional dress.

 

You will drive to Sapa, about 30 kms from Lao Cai. This town, formerly know as Cha Pa, is at the foot of the Fansipan Mountain, the highest mountain in Vietnam.

 

After arriving in Sapa, you can settle into your hotel and freshen up.

Day 12: Sapa

This is a free day. The area around Sapa is great for hikes, and you can do this either on your own or with a guide. If you prefer to keep things relaxed, you will find Sapa a charming place with fascinating markets and stylish restaurants and shops.

Day 13: Sapa - Lao Cai - Hanoi

The morning is free and then you will check out at noon and transfer to Lao Cai in the late afternoon.

 

You will spend the night on the 2nd class sleeper train to Hanoi.

Day 14: Hanoi - Halong Bay

Upon arrival, a comfortable bus will be ready to take you to Halong Bay in the Gulf of Tonkin, which includes some 1,600 islands and islets, forming a spectacular seascape of limestone pillars. In 1994 Halong Bay was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

 

First you will have breakfast in a local restaurant and then the drive to Halong Bay will take around 3 to 4 hours. Upon arrival, you will board a private junk, and you can then kick back and relax while cruising this fabulous bay.

 

During the cruise, you will stop to visit the Thien Cung Cave and then enjoy lunch on board the junk. Later, after dinner on the boat, you will disembark and transfer a short distance to your comfortable hotel for the night.

Day 15: Halong Bay - Hanoi

After driving back to Hanoi, you will have the rest of the day free for some last minute shopping. The Old Quarter, in particular, is full of some great little shops selling all sorts of exquisite handicrafts like lacquer ware, colorful lanterns, tribal silverware, luxurious silk clothing and much more.

 

In the evening, you will have a farewell dinner at our favorite restaurant in Hanoi.

Day 16: Hanoi

After checking out at noon, you will transfer to the airport for your flight back home.
